Making a difference: Our 16th annual Global Week of Service
The work we do inside Vertex transforms lives outside our labs and offices — from cutting-edge research and innovation to supporting the local communities where we operate across the world. We are dedicated to people, and our annual Global Week of Service is a remarkable example of living our culture of giving back.
In 2024, during our 16th annual Global Week of Service, more than 3,800 Vertexians participated — that’s 70% of our employees — our most impactful to date and once again surpassing average corporate volunteer participation rates. Across more than 20 countries, Vertexians contributed to 178 volunteer activities in-person, virtually or through a donation drive. And by the end of the week, we invested nearly 11,000 hours, which equates to serving >41,000 individuals in our communities.
“When you think about the impact of nearly 11,000 hours invested in our communities, it is pretty incredible,” said Liz Foster, who leads our Global Week of Service activities as a member of the Community Affairs team. “That is thousands of hygiene kits, it is miles and miles of beaches and parks that have been cleaned up, it is hundreds of pairs of socks donated to Boston Health Care for the Homeless, it’s beds being built for foster children, tons of meals for those experiencing food insecurity … it’s pretty incredible the impact we can all have together.”
Another way we expand our impact is by hosting donation drives. This year we organized a sock drive to support Boston Heath Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) and a virtual donation drive to support the Marylebone Project in the U.K. Both of these organizations work to provide support for individuals experiencing homelessness.
In addition to collecting nearly 1,000 pairs of new white socks for BHCHP, Vertex volunteers had the chance to hear from former BHCHP CEO Barry Bock and participate in volunteer activities throughout the week to assemble care kits to be distributed to thousands of individuals in the Boston area who are currently unhoused.
